De beroemde Special Air Service (SAS) van het Britse leger werd in juli 1941 opgericht door David Stirling. Het was een commando eenheid, opgericht om diep achter de vijandelijke linies te opereren, iets wat het erg succesvol deed. Speciaal aangepaste voertuigen werden gebruikt in Noord-Afrika, waaronder de beroemde 4×4 1/4-ton Truck, hoewel sterk aangepast voor haar achter-de-linies rol. Het voertuig begon te verschijnen in juli 1942.
